6 of the best Top Gear challenges

Posted on: 27/02/2014

If we’re honest the most important part of Top Gear has never been the cars, no the real star of this show is the rivalry between Clarkson, May and Hammond and the ridiculous lengths Jeremy goes to win at all costs. Bring on the Top Gear challenges...

Budget supercars

The challenge: Buy a supercar for less than £10k and drive it from Bristol to Slough.

The Ferrari 308 GT4 was Hammond's car of choice, Clarkson went for a Maserati Merak with pop up lights that didn't pop up, and finally May turned up with a Lambourgini Urraco, on a truck.

Amphibious cars

The challenge: Build an amphibious car that can sail across a 2 mile wide reservoir.

Hammond chose a VW campervan which he converted to a narrow boat style houseboat.

Clarkson went for speed, adding an outboard motor to a Toyota pick up truck to create the Toyboata.

Finally May was the tortoise in the Triumph herald turned classic sailing boat.

Porsches for under £1,500

The challenge: Buy a Porsche for under £1500, drive it from London to Brighton and put it in the hands of the Stig.

£750 bought Hammond a Porsche with popping lights, meanwhile May went with the 944 and Clarkson rocked up with 'a proper Porsche' the 928.

Reliant Robin space shuttle

The challenge:  Launch a car into space.

Roll forwards a few years and top gear challenges had their sights set slightly higher. Its light, it’s cheap and it tapers to a point - the Reliant Robin is on a mission to space. Of course the Top Gear gents didn't have a whole lot to do with this one, step up the team from Stockport's Rocket Men.

Budget police cars

The challenge: Buy a car for a max of £1k and turn it into the perfect modern police car for under £500.

Clarkson goes for scary Boudicca wheels whilst May goes for a more friendly ice cream van siren. Finally the Hamster has a doormat with some nails in it. How could they possibly fail.

Polar special

The challenge: Jeremy, James and Richard attempt to race the 450 mile journey from Northern Canada to the North Pole.

Jeremy and James have a specially adapted pickup truck and are surrounded by chocolate, Hammond had a sled and a team of 10 huskies.
