Is chris evans leaving top gear a good or bad thing?

Posted on: 06/07/2016

Top Gear has rapidly become one of BBC Two's most popular shows, but the future of the program just took a major hit, as presenter Chris Evans has decided to leave for good. He went on Twitter to explain his recent decision and said that while he has tried his absolute best, sometimes this is simply not good enough.

While some were surprised with the early departure and resulting announcement, industry analysts were not shocked, believing that his departure was essentially inevitable. According to one Daily Mirror writer, Evans had transformed into an out of control diva, a diva who was forcing audiences to laugh and who had become even more volatile than Jeremy Clarkson...

Here's what Clarkson had to say on the matter..

The BBC Two audience was not always enamored with Evans' style and the two parties seemed to have trouble meshing from the start. Presenters on Top Gear are expected to have a certain sense of humor and stylistic flair and critics consistently found that Evans lacked these necessary qualities.

For their part, The Independent is already proposing replacements for Chris Evans, as they've suggested the services of Steve Coogan. They believe that Coogan has the right amount of humor, charisma and likability to push the show back into the pole position and they also see Coogan as being a charming throwback to the old days of Top Gear.

Could Steve Coogan be the new presenter of top gear?

When Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May all decided to depart from the show at the same time last June, Evans was thought to be the right man for the job. But Perry McCarthy, a well-known racing driver, spoke to BBC News about Evans and he gave a somewhat scathing review of his time on the show.

He called the first show "terrible" and he also expressed a great deal of shock that the producers did not create a better return for the beloved program. While McCarthy did speak ill of the editing and the gags, he did offer that the show seemed to have turned a corner recently and that Evans could've been given a chance to keep his job.

For those who are wondering if this could be the end of the show, it does not seem very likely at the current moment. Top Gear is the type of program that will always have an audience, regardless of its presenters and most experts assume that interest in the show will increase significantly if a multifaceted talent like Coogan is brought into the fold.

In the meantime, longtime fans of the program are left to wait and wonder. While there are some who believe that style has been placed over content, industry observers are going to be watching closely to see who is chosen to fill Evans' shoes. In all likelihood, we have not seen the last of Top Gear yet.
