Intercoolers for BMW 3 Series (E46)

An intercooler is a heat exchanger that is used to cool air that’s been compressed by a turbo or supercharger. It should be positioned in the path of air flowing from the turbo to the motor. It’s needed because as you create more pressure with your turbo or supercharger, the amount of heat produced also increases. Hot air flowing around motors is less dense and therefore means less power is produced on any given stroke. Hot air also causes cylinder temperatures to increase, which can affect the pre-detonation and detonation sequence of the engine. Essentially, intercoolers such as those made by Forge make the air denser so more can fit in the cylinder. This makes the engine work more efficiently producing more power. Intercoolers can be positioned in different places depending on the engine. They can either be front, side or top mounted. Sometimes the position will affect the amount of drag but the positive effects of an intercooler will outweigh this. A position in front of the radiator means it can benefit from the cold air.
